The Steinway Gallery Singapore is proud to present the 4th Steinway Youth Piano Competition to discover the next national representative at the Steinway Regional Finals happening in Taiwan on the 7th August this year. Open to aspiring pianists aged 17 years and younger, the Steinway Youth Piano Competition holds a unique format with three separate age categories as compared to its regional and international counterparts.

A representative from Singapore will be selected from 9 contestants on the 5th of May to represent the nation in the regional round, joining seven other finalists from Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, who will compete to represent these Asian nations in the International Steinway Festival in Hamburg, Germany on 7 September 2018.

Noriko Ogawa 

Japan

Noriko Ogawa has achieved considerable renown throughout the world since her success at the Leeds International Piano Competition and he “ravishingly poetic playing” (Telegraph) has set her apart ever since. Her Images Book I and II were chosen as the top recommendation by BBC Radio 3’s CD Review in January 2014. Noriko’s first recording for BIS Records of solo piano music by Eric Satie, released in 2016, received high praise from Classic FM, Gramophone and The Arts Desk and a 5* review from BBC Music Magazine, and the second volume, released in 2017, was met with equal enthusiasm.

Murray Mclachlan

Since making his professional debut in 1986 at the age of 21 under the baton of Sir Alexander Gibson, Murray McLachlan has consistently received outstanding critical acclaim, Educated at Chetham’s School of Music and Cambridge University, his mentors included Ronald Stevenson, David Hartigan, Ryszard Bakst, Peter Katin and Norma Fisher.

McLachlan’s repertoires include over 40 concertos and 25 recital programmes. He has performed the complete Beethoven piano sonata cycle for four times, as well as the complete piano music of Brahms. He has given the first performance of works by many composers,  including Martin Butler, Ronald Stevenson, Charles Camilleri, Michael Parkin and even Beethoven! He has appeared as soloist with most of the leading UK orchestras. His recognition has been far-reaching, bringing invitations to perform on all five continents. At the same time he continues to give numerous concerts and master classes in the UK.

Tang Zhe 唐哲

Zhe Tang, a professor and vice dean at the Shanghai Conservatory. Born in China, Zhe Tang entered the Shanghai Conservatory at the age of 12, and continued his studies in the U.S. at the Eastman School of Music. Returning to China, he became one of the youngest piano professors at the Shanghai Conservatory in 2003, and was later appointed to prominent leadership, teaching, and research positions. He is the recipient of numerous international awards and prizes and is a frequent soloist and collaborator with prominent orchestras and conductors, including the China Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shanghai Symphony.

  • Category 2 – Ages 12 to 14 (i.e. born between and inclusive of January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2010)
  • Category 3 – Ages 15 to 17 (i.e. born between and inclusive of January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2007)

Repertoire requirements

  • Participants must present 3 contrasting selections.
  • Repertoire must include the first movement of a Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi, or Schubert.
  • No concerti or transcriptions are allowed.
  • Participants are required to perform the exact same repertoire for further stages of the competition.
  • Auditions will be conducted in a continuous, live-recording manner. Re-takes are not allowed.

Maximum 20 minutes
