PIANO EXAM PIECES (ABRSM) 

Steinway Gallery Singapore and Forte Music Training are coming together in a tour de force piano teachers’ workshop that champions excellence in Piano Pedagogy and Music Making. Piano teachers in Singapore attending this workshop will get to hear the exam pieces presented on selected models of pianos under the prestigious Steinway brand.


Who is this workshop for:

  • All piano teachers keen on continual learning and self-upgrading.
  • Piano teachers new to the Steinway family of pianos.

Workshop Goal:

  • Teachers will discover pertinent teaching points of selected exam pieces.
  • Tips and tricks on trouble shooting areas of potential roadblocks that students might encounter in their learning.
  • Suggested solutions and methodical approach to teaching.

MS. DOROTHY CHIA 

ABOUT DOROTHY CHIA

Dorothy Chia, has taught piano for over 20 years in Singapore. Her business, Forte Music Training, has private piano studios located at Potong Pasir, Woodlands and Seletar Hills. Dorothy conducts piano lessons to beginners up to advanced diploma levels. She specializes in coaching and mentoring piano teachers in Singapore. She has also lectured at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Institute of Management, Temasek Polytechnic, Raffles Girls Secondary and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

Dorothy is the author of Piano Pedagogy- The Questions and The Answers, a must-have workbook for teachers working on their viva voce component of the teaching exams, & Theory Explorer, a set of 2 music theory books for beginners aged 4-7. A well sought after pedagogue, Dorothy has conducted masterclasses and adjudicated in competitions organized by Steinway.

Ms. Dorothy Chia obtained her Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the acclaimed University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is the 1992 winner of the prestigious DH Baldwin Fellowship, and is currently the only Singaporean to hold this award. Her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Communications (Honours), was obtained from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dorothy also plays the electone and the pipe organ. She serves as organist at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul and the Church of St. Peter and Paul.

Competition Requirements

Categories

  • Category 1 – Ages 11 and below (i.e. born on or after January 1, 2011)
  • Category 2 – Ages 12 to 14 (i.e. born between and inclusive of January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2010)
  • Category 3 – Ages 15 to 17 (i.e. born between and inclusive of January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2007)

Repertoire requirements

  • Participants must present 3 contrasting selections.
  • Repertoire must include the first movement of a Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi, or Schubert.
  • No concerti or transcriptions are allowed.
  • Participants are required to perform the exact same repertoire for further stages of the competition.
  • Auditions will be conducted in a continuous, live-recording manner. Re-takes are not allowed.
