As we continue our celebration of Steinway & Sons’ 165th Anniversary this year, we would like to invite you to our next event showcasing a special limited edition Steinway piano – The Crown Jewel Ice Birch upright.

This time, from the doors of Broadway to the grand stages of the world’s opera houses,  Steinway Gallery Singapore is proud to present an evening of ‘’Love & Lust’’ – a recital of music and songs performed by Violinist Ikuko Takahashi, Pianist Aya Sakou accompanying vocalist Wang Tong.

Violinist 

ABOUT IKUKO TAKAHASHI

Ikuko Takahashi was born in Japan, started playing the violin the age of 6. She made her debut as a soloist the age of 12 years old with the Bunkyo Conservatory in Tokyo and solo recital the age of 13 years old.

Ikuko continued to study music at  Interlochen Arts Academy and Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University in the USA with the scholarships and received Mayer’s awards as a solo violinist and prizes from the chamber music competition and the violin competition in the USA.

After she graduated from Bachelor, Master and Performance Diploma from  Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, she worked with Bergen Philharmonic and Oslo Philharmonic in Norway, Gavle symphony orchestra in Sweden,Copenhagen Philharmonic and Danish Radio symphony orchestra in Denmark, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic in England, RTE national orchestra, Irish Chamber orchestra in Ireland, National Symphony, Alabama Symphony in USA. 

She also worked with many great conductors at the Verbier Music Festival in Switzerland and currently at the Grand Teton Music Festival during the summer.

Currently, she is working with the Malaysia Philharmonic and also performs chamber music concerts in USA, Europe and in Asia. 

Pianist 

About Aya Sakou 

A graduate of the Toho Gakuen School of Music and the Musik Hochshule Winterthur-Zurich where she obtained diplomas in teaching and performance, Aya Sakou is a regular accompanist at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts as well as many festivals and master classes. She often performs with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as a chamber and orchestra musician and has an active career in Japan as an accompanist.

As a soloist, she won first prizes in competitions such as the Pitina Young Pianist Competition, the South Japan Piano Competition and the National Music Competition of Japan. She has given many recitals in Europe and Japan and has been invited to perform concertos with the Fontinu chamber orchestra and the Swiss chamber orchestra. In 2004-2005, two of her recitals were broadcasted by the BBC radio.

Vocals 

About Wang Tong 

Wang Tong has made many appearances on the stage in Asia and in Europe in opera productions as well as solo performances.

She was awarded prizes at many competitions including the Trinity College of London Music Competition, Sin Tai Vocal Competition, and the 6th Asian Youth Music Competition.

Wang Tong graduated with a Master’s in Music from the Royal Danish Academy of Music Copenhagen Denmark under the tutelage of Prof. Åsa Bäverstam and her Bachelor’s in Music from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Singapore under Nancy Yuen.

Competition Requirements

  • Category 2 – Ages 12 to 14 (i.e. born between and inclusive of January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2010)
  • Category 3 – Ages 15 to 17 (i.e. born between and inclusive of January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2007)

Repertoire requirements

  • Participants must present 3 contrasting selections.
  • Repertoire must include the first movement of a Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi, or Schubert.
  • No concerti or transcriptions are allowed.
  • Participants are required to perform the exact same repertoire for further stages of the competition.
  • Auditions will be conducted in a continuous, live-recording manner. Re-takes are not allowed.

Maximum 20 minutes
