6th steinway youth piano competition – Semi-finals results

Steinway Gallery Singapore is proud to present the following young talents who have successfully advanced to the Grand Finals that will take place on 18th June 2022 for Professional Class and 19th June 2022 for Amateur Class. The Grand Prize winner of the Professional Class will represent Singapore at the Southeast Asia Steinway Regional Finals to compete among 8 regional contestants for a coveted spot at the International Steinway Festival in Hamburg, Germany.

Our Honorable Judges – Professional Class

Mr Frank DeMeglio

Mr. Frank DeMeglio is a classical music teacher, lecturer, and writer. Having taught part-time at LASALLE since 2003, he joined the faculty in 2009. He has also been teaching the Keyboard Literature course for the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music since 2004.

Ms Julie Tan

Known for her broad pedagogical knowledge and innovative teaching techniques, Singaporean piano pedagogue, Julie Tan enjoys a multi-faceted music ‘passion-cum-profession’. She is a lecturer at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, President of The Singapore Music Teachers Association, and National Arts Council Performing Arts external assessor.

Ms Low Shao Suan

Low Shao Suan is an award-winning pianist and composer. A graduate of the famed École Normale de Musique de Paris in France, she has performed numerous times as a double piano soloist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, Ms. Low has collaborated with world-renowned musicians such as saxophonist Claude Delangle, and tubist Øystein Baadsvik. As an avid composer and songwriter, Ms. Low’s songs have been sung by Asian pop singers and her works have been performed all over the world.

Dr Abigail Sin

Singaporean pianist Abigail Sin’s musical journey has taken her to concert venues across the globe, from the Aram Khachaturian concert hall in Yerevan to Wigmore Hall in London. A top prize winner of several international piano competitions, she is an alumnus of the prestigious Verbier Festival Academy and is a Young Steinway Artist.

Dr. Sin is the co-founder of the ‘More Than Music’ concert series, which aims to bring classical chamber music to new audiences. Upon completing a Ph.D. at the Royal Academy of Music in 2018, she joined the academic faculty of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

Dr Nellie Seng

Dr. Nellie Seng is a dedicated pedagogue and mother. She is currently the Head of Keyboard Studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and a member of the organizing committees of the Nanyang International Music Competition and the Nanyang International Piano Academy.

Our Honorable Judges – Amateur Class

Dr Chang Tou Liang

Chang Tou Liang, a family physician by profession, is the most prolific classical music reviewer of The Straits Times. From 1997 to the present, he has written over 2400 reviews of classical concerts and CD recordings.

He was the Artistic Director of the Singapore International Piano Festival (2004-2008) and founded the ‘Young Virtuoso Recital Series’, featuring Singapore’s most talented young musicians in concert. This has identified many artists who have become important figures in Singapore’s classical music scene. In 2011, he was conferred the Special Recognition Award by the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Arts for his contributions to the arts.

Mr Clarence Lee

Clarence Lee was admitted to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the age of 15 as a National Arts Council Scholar and graduated as Class Valedictorian and was a recipient of the coveted Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medallion as the top-performing scholar of his cohort.

Mr. Lee is currently on the Piano Faculty at LASALLE College of the Arts, an Adjunct Collaborative Pianist at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, the Program Director of the Young Artist Program at MW Fine Arts Academy and also the Vice-President of the International Performing & Visual Arts Examination Board (IPVAEB).

Dr Iryna Vokhmianina

Dr. Vokhmyanina’s professional teaching experience spans more than 25 years. She has taught piano at several colleges and universities in Europe and Asia. For many years, Dr. Vokhmyanina held the position of a Piano Professor in the Department of Music Performing Arts at Kharkiv National Pedagogical University (Ukraine).

Currently, she teaches piano, accompaniment classes, and chamber music in Singapore. Dr. Vokhmyanina is the Founder and Artistic Director of the project “Symphony of Motherhood” in Singapore since 2012 as well as the Honorary President of WPTA Singapore since 2017.

Ms Nabillah Jalal

Steinway Educational Partner and Pianist Nabillah Jalal is the first Malay-Singaporean to study at the Royal College of Music, graduating in 2016 with Honours. As an active advocate for youth, cultural and community programs, Nabillah frequently guest performs at private events and award showcases. Nabillah continues to produce and perform contemporary music that speaks to her Malay-Singaporean identity.

In 2018, Nabillah launched NJ Studio, a boutique piano school. Every year, NJ Studio aims to sponsor classical music education for selected students under MOE’s Financial Assistance Scheme. Nabillah now sits on the steering committee for CLF Labs, Anugerah Belia Cemerlang, and the People’s Association Youth Movement amongst others.

Ms Lena Huang

Ms. Lena Huang is a classical pianist with over 20 years of experience. As a music educator, Ms. Huang also founded Music Forest Studio and has successfully tutored many students for international music examinations. She also actively arranges concerts and recitals for her students to perform at.

Ms. Huang strongly believes in actively refining her pedagogy to help nurture the next generation of musicians, both teachers and students alike, towards achieving their fullest potential.

Lastly, we want to congratulate all our pianists who have advanced into the Grand Finals! We look forward to seeing you perform again at the Grand Finals on 18th June 2022 for Professional Class and 19th June 2022 for Amateur Class.

Competition Requirements

  • Category 3 – Ages 15 to 17 (i.e. born between and inclusive of January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2007)

Repertoire requirements

  • Participants must present 3 contrasting selections.
  • Repertoire must include the first movement of a Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi, or Schubert.
  • No concerti or transcriptions are allowed.
  • Participants are required to perform the exact same repertoire for further stages of the competition.
  • Auditions will be conducted in a continuous, live-recording manner. Re-takes are not allowed.

Maximum 20 minutes
