Range
India, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam. The most famous countries of origin for this high-quality round timber are Burma and Thailand. There was a great demand in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s years. For this reason, the qualities have decreased considerably.
Uses
Teak numbers amongst the oldest commercial lumbers. Due to its resistance to fungi and insect manifestation, it is ideal for shipbuilding. High quality wood for architectural woodwork and massproduced furniture which is a little out of fashion nowadays. It is frequently used for furniture still in Scandinavia.
Properties
In the veneer trade, a difference is made between Golden Teak and Streaked Teak. The wood has a slightly oily surface.
Machining
In general, the machining of Teak does not present any difficulties. Mineral deposits in the wood have a severe dulling effect on tools. When using carbide-tipped tools, very smooth surfaces can be achieved.
Seasoning
The wood has to be dried slowly and carefully – this is possible without any problems. There is no tendency to check or warp.
Finishing
This tree trunk represents with its grain run the character/freak of nature. A maximum of 1 grand and 2 upright pianos can be produced out of it, whereas no instrument resembles the other.
